Caroline Doran

I started training with Sensei Wicks in 1983. I have also received training under Professor Tatsuo Suzuki Sensei, and in the past have trained under other Japanese Sensei’s such as Hiroji Fukazawa, Masafumi Shiomitsu and Fumio Sugasawa.

I obtained my Black belt 1st Dan in March 1991 at the age of 17. After many more years of training and improving I am now a 4th Dan

I began teaching by assisting sensei Wicks at his Fleet Dojo as a 1st Kyu, Finding that I thoroughly enjoyed teaching children and having the opportunity to pass on the knowledge that I had been given and seeing the children enjoying their training and growing as karateka gave me great satisfaction. This provided me with the skills and confidence to teach on my own and I now have my own Club in Mytchett and teach on Mondays and Thursdays 6-7p.m. I also teach once a Month at the Su-Ha-Ri Kata Courses at Hart Leisure Centre in Fleet.

I enjoy all aspects of Karate and have competed in many competitions over the years both in Kumite and Kata, having great success at club and national level. Winning Gold at both the 1990 and 1991 WIKF National championships. I first represented England at the age of 18 winning bronze in kumite at the 1991 European championships in Dublin, a great achievement being the youngest competitor in my category. I continued competing at international level winning bronze or Silver medals at all events I entered. My biggest achievements were becoming European champion in Norway in 1995 and winning Bronze at the World Championships in Florida in 1997.

Although not competing anymore, I now get great satisfaction teaching my students and am very proud of their achievements, knowing that I am able to motivate them and allow them the opportunity to succeed and get the same satisfaction from their karate as I have over more than 30years is a priviledge. Over the years I have been extremely proud to have had my own students reach their Dan Grades and get selected to represent England at international competitions. I also believe that it is important to be a good role model and hope that as well as inspiring my junior students I can also show females that Karate is enjoyable and achievable for all.

I am forever grateful for the opportunities Sensei Wicks has given me to train, compete and teach. Always motivating me to aim high but most of all to enjoy all aspects of Karate.
